Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers and Senator Enzi to Speak at Annual Meeting-May 5-6

As the economy starts to recover, now is the time to analyze and discuss what is needed to make that recovery sustainable, and how we can build a stronger a more competitive future workforce. We are so pleased that Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Senator Michael Enzi (R-WY) will join us at our upcoming Annual Partners Meeting to share their views on those subjects on May 6, 2010. Please make sure to join us for Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers' Morning Policy Address at 8:30 a.m. and for Senator Enzi's Closing Keynote at 12:30 p.m. Both will share with us their perspectives and the work the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the House Education and Labor Committee are doing to address these issues.

Text4Baby-Using Innovative Partnerships and Technology to Address a National Health Priority

text for babyThe infant mortality rate in the U.S. is one of the highest in the industrialized world-and that rate is on the rise. 28,000 infants die before their first birthday, signifying a public health crisis. To address that crisis, Text4Baby has created an innovative public-private partnership to use technology and text messaging to create a free information service designed to promote maternal and infant health for new mothers. Text messages are especially ideal to reach women of childbearing age and minority populations who face higher infant mortality rates.

Women who sign up for the service receive free text messages focusing on birth defects prevention, immunization, nutrition, seasonal flu, mental health, oral health and safe sleep for one year. It is made possible through a broad public-private partnership which includes the White House Office on Science and Technology Policy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Voxiva, Johnson & Johnson, and CTIA-The Wireless Foundation.

The formal launch of Text4Baby was held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill. Since February 2010, it has had 30,000 new subscribers, and is looking to scale up nationally. Corporate Voices is exploring ways we can work with Text4Baby to educate new mothers about the benefits of workplace lactation. To learn more about Text4Baby, visit: http://text4baby.org/.
Karen Pittman Testifies on the Whole Child & ESEA Reauthorization

PittmanOn Thursday, April 22nd, Karen Pittman, founder and executive director of the Forum for Youth Investment and the creator of Ready by 21, participated in a roundtable discussion held by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

The hearing, titled "Meeting the Needs of the Whole Student," sought ideas from leading experts about how federal policy can better support efforts to address the holistic needs of youth, since students who are healthy, safe, and engaged in learning are more likely to succeed.  Karen urged the lawmakers to broaden their vision around ESEA, the nation's top federal investment in the K-12 system, to include a wide range of supports for families, community organizations-and employers, "who provide students with opportunities to apply their learning, pursue their interests and build social capital."  And she quoted extensive research from Corporate Voices, among others, on what it takes to prepare students for productive, lifelong careers.
