Flex LogoCorporate Voices would like to congratulate Marriott International, Inc., Carducci & Associates,  Ocean Tomo LLC, and Sittercity for joining our workplace flexibility campaign since our last update, and for committing their support for Corporate Voices' Statement of Support for Expanding Workplace Flexibility.

They join Accenture, Allstate Insurance Company, AOL, Baxter International Inc., Bright Horizons Family Solutions, Childrens' Creative Learning Centers, Cisco Systems, Inc., Ernst & Young, Knowledge Universe, KPMG LLP, LifeCare, McGladreySM, Sodexo, Workplace Options, and a growing number of businesses that recognize the value of workplace flexibility. Workplace flexibility practices enable businesses to modernize the workplace to meet the needs of the 21st century workforce so that working families and businesses can be more productive, more competitive, healthier, and happier.

With generous support from th
e Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Corporate Voices launched this campaign on June 28, after the White House announced in March that Corporate Voices would lead a campaign to create a broader awareness of the positive business and employee benefits of workplace flexibility. We are now inviting all of our corporate partners to sign our Statement of Support for Expanding Workplace Flexibility and lead the business community in this effort.

The White House Council on Women and Girls spotlighted Corporate Voices' workplace flexibility campaign when it publicly launched its  Work-Flex Event Starter Kit at Vice President Biden's Middle Class Task Force event on July 20. The Starter Kit is designed to encourage businesses, employees, and universities to start a conversation in their local communities about how workplace flexibility can help empower families to meet the dual demands of work and life.

Corporate Voices looks forward to working with the Women's Bureau at the Department of Labor to galvanize local business engagement around four regional flexibility forums that will be planned throughout the year in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, and New York. Please stay tuned to learn about how your company can become involved!

2010 KIDS COUNT Data Book Released

kids count with canvasThe Annie E. Casey Foundation, a Corporate Voices funding partner, published their 21st annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, which profiles the status of children and families on a national and state-by-state basis and ranks states on 10 measures of well-being.  It provides easy, online access to the latest child well-being data on hundreds of indicators by state, county, city, and school district.

The research found that overall improvements in child well-being that began in the late 1990s stalled in the years just before the current economic downturn.  The report stressed the tremendous impact of the current economic downturn on vulnerable children and families, and cautioned that the full impact will not be known for many years.  A couple quick data points from the report include:
  • Based on trend data released by the Casey Foundation, the rate of children living in poverty in 2008 was 18 percent, indicating that 1 million more children were living in poverty in that year than in 2000.
  • More teens in 2008 across all five of the largest racial and ethnic groups were either in school or had obtained a high school diploma or General Education Diploma compared with teens in 2000.
  • Looking nationwide across all child well-being indicators, New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Vermont rank highest, and Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi rank the lowest.
